local foods week

We are doing a localvore week challenge, trying to eat as much stuff as possible that was produced within 100 miles. Breakfast is local wheat berries (boiled for 1 hour), local milk, local blueberries (leftover from the pie), and maple syrup from a farm about 2 miles away. It was absolutely delicious.

This menu does sound really good - it was making me hungry again at 10.40 at night. But how is eating locally ever to be more than an occasional stunt if breakfast takes an hour to prepare? Maybe it could become a sustainable routine if the wheat-berries were boiled the night before.

We actually boiled a mountain of wheat berries the night before and had them for breakfast all week. They kept very well in the refrigerator, as did the blueberries.
